TORM continued to expand its operations. The company acquired five ships at a favourable price from D/S Botnia following its liquidation. TORM then began to sail cross sea voyages with cargoes of corn from the USA, cryolite from Greenland and coffee from Brazil. In 1910, the “Hermia” made the longest TORM voyage to date – from Libau in Letland to Cardiff in Wales.
The shipping industry entered another decline when World War I broke out in 1914. Coal prices increased and shipping costs escalated.
During the war, TORM lost six ships. Four of the ships were requisitioned by the Danish government to service the war effort, including the company’s first acquisition, “Alice”. Torpedoes hit five of the ships while the “Alice” was involved in a collision. Six crewmembers lost their lives.
