1889-1899 TORM is founded in 1899 by Captain Ditlev E. Torm and Christian Schmiegelow. The TORM fleet grows to four ships in the first 10 years. 1899-1909 The Company grows rapidly. TORM is listed on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange in 1905. After Captain Torm dies in 1907, the company leadership changes hands. 1909-1919 TORM continues to expand its shipping operations. TORM ships begin to sail international voyages. | 1919-1929 The Company carries its first cargo of fruit from the Middle East to England and orders its first refrigerated ship. TORM celebrates its 40th anniversary. 1929-1939 TORM expands operations and in 1933 takes delivery of its first motorised ship. The Company celebrates its 50th anniversary. 1939-1949 During World War II, TORM loses 13 ships and 41 employees. The Company quickly recovers and increases the number of sailing routes. | 1949-1959 Continued growth and consolidation keep TORM in a leading position. 1959-1969 The TORM fleet increases. The latest additions feature separate chambers for crew members, air conditioning and a remotecontrolled motor. 1969-1979 Mergers and efficiency improvements help to streamline operations. A number of the older ships are sold off, and 25 percent of the seafaring employees are laid off. | 1979-1989 Environmental concerns are high on the agenda. The first double-hull tankers are delivered, and waster water treatment systems are installed on the older ships. 1989-1999 TORM celebates its 100th anniversary. The Company makes shipping history when it establishes pool partnerships with other companies. 1999- Outstanding financial results enable TORM to continue its expansion. |
