Newbuildings and projects

TORM is highly active in building new vessels and other related projects. We put together teams consisting of qualified specialists, including ship captains and engineers, who can cover all aspects of newbuilding. Their  competencies include steel construction, surface coating (painting) and fitting of mechanical and electrical equipment.

Our experienced teams ensure that our vessels are built according to the strictest international shipping standards.

How We Build Ships

Typically, each yard has its own Site Team that supervises the newbuilding process. TORM Site Teams consist of TORM Captains or Chief Engineers as well as locally qualified specialists stationed at the shipbuilding site during the entire building period.

A full Site Team consists of a large number of highly knowledgeable individuals covering various aspects of building new ships.

Depending on the specific project, it takes approximately one year to build a ship, from cutting the first steel plate to delivery of the vessel. It takes approximately five months to cut the steel and prefabricate the block sections of the vessel in manageable sizes (up to 250 tons). The shipyard then spends up to three months assembling the block sections in a dry dock or at a slipway. After launching the vessel, the shipyard paints, installs and commissions equipment. Finally, before the vessel is delivered, it undergoes a sea trial.
