As a major product tanker company, TORM recognizes its responsibility to the environment. We are committed to environmental goals that will both reduce the impact of our fleet operations and boost the competitiveness of our business. And we are acting on these goals.
Further to its commitments to the UN Global Compact and Sustainable Development Goal 13, TORM is pushing fast forward in our environmental efforts and will reduce carbon intensity by 40% compared to the IMO baseline by 2025 - instead of 2030 and zero CO2 emissions from its operating fleet by 2050.
Carbon intensity by 2025
TORM integrates these goals into fleet management and investment strategies, which are in turn implemented through concrete activities designed to minimize pollution of the seas and the atmosphere.
TORM continues to invest in technology and activities that enable our fleet to operate with greater energy efficiency. This makes good sense environmentally and financially.
improved fuel efficiency in 2022 compared to 2015
Our One TORM platform provides detailed insight into each vessel’s energy consumption patterns, enabling managers to identify and share best practices that promote fuel efficiency and quickly implement corrective actions when necessary. TORM has achieved a 37.1% reduction in Annual Efficiency Ratio (AER) compared to the IMO baseline (2008).
Vessels take on and discharge ballast water to stabilize trim and optimize operational efficiency. Because discharged ballast water may introduce non-native species into new marine ecosystems, TORM has installed ballast water treatment systems which eliminate this impact to 65% of its fleet in compliance with the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention. We continue to invest in more systems for more vessels.
TORM plays an active role in the shipping industry - also in forums dedicated to reducing emissions through groundbreaking innovation.
Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping: TORM is a Mission Ambassador in the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. Along with like-minded companies and by working together and sharing knowledge, we will work towards the decarbonization of the maritime industry.
The Getting to Zero Coalition: TORM is an active member of the Getting to Zero Coalition, a partnership that includes decision-makers from the shipping and energy industries, IGOs, and governments. The coalition’s goal is as ambitious as it is simple: Develop commercially viable zero-emission vessels powered by zero-emission fuels by 2030.
ShippingLab: TORM is a founding member of the ShippingLab, a collaborative effort to create Denmark’s first environmentally friendly ship through a new platform for maritime research, development, and innovation.
